Planting season

So yesterday I spent the morning planting up two of my four raised beds in my garden by the pond. I'd love to think by summer they'll look like this - but that's pretty adventurous! I've started with green beans, broccoli, carrots, kale and lettuce. When the threat of frost has gone I'll move to the third bed for the tomatoes, peppers, melons and cucumbers. The fourth bed is my biggest and I'm keeping that for flowers. I've been at a loss as to what to surround the beds with, as right now it's a brown dirt mess, mulch for that large of a spot is expensive, wood chips attract termites, and gravel - again too pricey. I think I'll plant grass there instead, it's the most economical option and will definitely make that area look more complete. Right now it's pretty barren, bar a few hyacinths. It's very frustrating gardening here in Rockland, for the obvious reason - rocks. We also have a lot of what they call "Squaw Root" which is very hard to work around, and with the endless tree roots from the semi woodland setting - it's not exactly prosperous. But I have Bramble Farm in my heart and know it will happen sooner than later - so I will plod on with what I have right now and make the best of it as much as I can. One thing I need to do everywhere I plant - is to deer fence. They eat everything around here, even the plants labeled "deer resistant". So long as I can get the front and back garden areas tidy and pretty - it'll do, especially when it comes time to sell. I have so much organizing of clutter and collected garbage to do on the inside of the house it feels sometimes like selling is many MANY years away. I have to keep believing that what I really want, and how I want to raise my children is within reach, even on grey days like today, when nothing seems possible except crawling under a blanket and sleeping! Onwards and upwards.

Operation Bluebird

Before moving to our slightly more rural lodgings here in Rockland County, we lived in Brooklyn, NYC. Some might think there isn't much in the way of wildlife to be had in the city - but they'd be wrong. A little wrong anyway! Growing up in Scotland where wildlife is abundant, I certainly had that opinion of city living, enforced after a spell living in London where all I saw were pigeons and on one occasion a fox. However in Brooklyn we regularly had a large possum in our back yard, so much so we named him Pete! We had the (dis)pleasure of meeting several racoons, and the joy of being able to feed Cardinals and Blue Jays most days. There were the usual finches and once even a bright yellow Goldfinch. One of the draws for me about moving out of the city was definitely being able to see more wildlife. We haven't been disappointed. So far we've been treated to many visits from deer, rabbits, skunk (not so welcome!), groundhogs, turkey vultures, hawks and coyotes. But it's the small birds I love. Apart I might say from owls which will always be welcome, especially of the Great Horned variety. In the bird department we have many different Woodpeckers, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Carolina Wrens, Hermit Wrens, Tufted Titmouse, Hummingbirds, Nuthatches, Chickadees, Black Eyed Juncos, Oriole,  Robins... and a lot more that I'm forgetting! But there is one we do not have, even though they are all over the Hudson Valley - the Bluebird. So my mission this year is to finally get one here - you know how it goes - photo or it didn't happen!
I'm going to start by putting a nesting box out front on a very large, old maple, it faces the house and has an expansive piece of grassland out there, conditions I've heard they like. The pond is in sight if they fly around a bit, and I'll put out some meal worms.. apparently that's what they eat. Not sure what else to do but I'm crossing my fingers that will be enough!

busy days of Spring

Yesterday saw me doing all the housework in 1 hour flat - so I could spend most of the day planting out all my perennial seedlings into the raised bed near the pond.
I placed them in rows - Lilies and Hollyhock at the back, then in front Lupines, then Daisies, then Catmint.  I've put some flashy silvery tape up with twigs to try keep the birds off until they are established.
Speaking of birds - Liliana and I got to see a Robin take multiple baths in the pond yesterday, up close and personal! Fun days! Today I launched my new hair flower collection on etsyhttp://www.etsy.com/listing/98846034/cream-rose-bridal-hair-flower-clip Maribella Rose - is a smaller 3" version of some of my most popular hair flowers - available in cream, pink, blue, purple and red - for only $18 - I'm sure it'll be popular!

I'm running a competition on Bramble Boutique's Facebook page - submit your best bridal hair style pic and have a chance to win the entire collection! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bramble-Boutique/254860354589104

Off out now to tackle the front garden before the baby wakes up - then it's all over, as I'm sure ya'll know!

Happy First Day of Spring!

It is finally here - it's official! Although it feels like it's been Spring here in New York since January, today is the day. The first day of Spring! I had quite an exciting day, put up my Hummingbird Feeder, after seeing they've already been spotted in Connecticut - so any minute they could be at my feeder! The chain I had bought was silver, and knowing that birds don't like silver I spray painted it red - the Hummingbird attractor color.  I can see it from my desk, so I've been glancing out every time I sit down!  Spent around 4 hours clearing cleaves and branches out back, and reset all my paths with stones.  I took down the bird feeders over the deck, going to put them lower on the tree so we can be a poop free zone (well as much as possible).. Oh and when I walked up the path to get the children from the school bus - boom - there they were - around 5 or 6 peony bushes, each with loads of shoots popping up! I love Peonies - they are my favorite flower, so to discover there are Peonies here just about made me day.  Now to thoughts of tomorrows excitements and adventures,  I can't wait.

the fairy of the bird world is heading our way!

So growing up in lovely Scotland, which has lets be fair Highland Cows - so we win right? But anyway back to the point - we are sadly lacking in the Hummingbird department.  The first time I ever saw one, was 8 years ago in Upstate New York, at my Mother in Laws house.  I was instantly hooked on hummers! I love the way they appear from nowhere and are gone in a flash. They truly are the fairy of the bird world. In 8 yrs living in NYC I didn't see one hummingbird, not one, garden, park, shore - zip zero.  One of the (many) things I am excited for in the coming months is witnessing the first one in my garden here.  After looking for a while, and really hating all these nasty plastic feeders I've settled on an antique bottle one, with a copper base. I just can't wait to fill it and hang it by the window - I already have a quiet but highly visible spot for it all worked out!  And this map shows - they are on their way! So happy about hummers!

gardening times

So all my seedlings are up.. around 300 of them! I just planted another 2 trays so hopefully my garden will be positively overflowing with flowers and veg in the not too distant future. I'm having a contractor come out to give me a quote for the work I need doing in the kitchen - new backsplash, tiled floors, butcherblock counters and taking out a bit of wall to open it all up a bit. I'm hoping everything will be ready by Spring so we can get some chickens, still deciding on breeds but Easter Eggers and Silkies seem to be at the front of my list! Also planning on getting a greenhouse hopefully next weekend so would like to plan out and prep its space this week including the base. Its to be 55f today so I plan on getting out in the garden with the children to dig some more, clear some more, invent some more.. promises be a good day, going to make the most of it before the snow comes back, albeit, I hope, briefly!

how does your garden grow....

I've been planning my dream garden since I was about 5 I think.. so I'm very excited to actually be planning it for real this time. I've drawn and redrawn my plans (so far for only the back) about three million times, but I think I'm about ready to get to work! I plan to use the existing stone, of which there is plenty, to edge out my paths and borders. Then hire a chipper to make chippings out of all the branches laying around to start the paths. Then it'll be onto setting up the beds, adding topsoil where needed, and a lot of clearing. I'm ordering my seeds today and plan to get some lighting hooked up to a big shelving unit I have so I can do this the right way from the get go. The guys are finishing up the fence today, so tomorrow starts the fun :) I have planned a woodland garden, an alpine garden, rose and cottage gardens, childrens garden, and a picket fenced raised veg garden. I would like to add a bit more lawn probably by means of turf strips. There will be a bench with an arbor of climbing roses at the end of a long path through the woodland garden. And a lily pond past the rock garden. I'm very excited to see this progress, and will be posting pictures as I go.
